Independent prescribing enables pharmacists to play a greater role in patient care, supporting people from diagnosis through to treatment, advice and follow-up.
Funded training opportunities are available for eligible pharmacists working across community pharmacy, general practice, hospitals, mental health services and other NHS settings. Applications for training places with start dates up to March 2027 are now open.

Course information: This professional education module aims to give students an in-depth understanding of the breadth of COPD. Students will gain an understanding of how history taking and important diagnostic tests are used to ensure safe and accurate diagnosis.

Course information: Spirometry is not just for adults, children and young people can also perform spirometry. Understanding respiratory illness at an earlier stage can be vital in maintain health throughout younger years, but also in adulthood. Although the equipment and the test itself do not differ entirely from adult spirometry, there are some key differences those working with Children and Young people need to be aware of to get the most accurate results possible.
This course is designed to take you from very little knowledge, to perform spirometry safely, to published standards, however, if you have done spirometry previously, this will be a great refresher also. The course content follows the Association of Respiratory Technology and Physiology (ARTP) standards for spirometry, which are the gold standard in the UK.

Course information: This course is aimed at anyone reporting spirometry with children and young people (CYP), however we would encourage those who are competent at performing spirometry to consider this course as it will help improve your knowledge and skills in performing, but also be able to understand what to expect when patients perform spirometry.
As with all our spirometry courses it will prepare delegates for ARTP assessment with awareness of their requirements. As an organisation we recommend a period of consolidation before undertaking the ARTP assessment. The course has been created and designed by Phil Lawrence, the Senior Respiratory Clinical Scientist at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation trust in Liverpool. Phil has over 10 years of experience and is an expert in paediatric respiratory physiology. Rotherham Respiratory are delighted to welcome Laura King as a guest tutor to this course. Laura is a Clinical Nurse specialist in Paediatric Asthma, working at Barts Health NHS Trust.
The case studies are presented as video presentations with children of varying ages used as case studies. These are anonymised traces with permission given by the subjects. Each section has interactive knowledge checks and guided learning activities which offer further learning.

Course info: This course clearly defines the difference between reporting and interpreting and can serve as revision for those who have been practising for many years. This course will prepare delegates for ARTP assessment for the Spirometry and Reporting part of the register. As the ARTP are the ONLY current assessors of competence all training providers will be working towards that assessment.
Our clinical expert who created and designed the e-learning (Chris Loveridge) has years of experience in working clinically and in training and education. She was part of the working party who created ‘A guide to quality assured spirometry in primary care’ (2013) and created the 10 steps to interpretation. For all of our spirometry courses she has rewritten these as the ‘Seven Steps to standardised spirometry’ (2020) and this forms the basis of our learning to ensure all spirometry traces performed and reported are ‘fit for purpose.’
Our courses have PP video presentations for each session, with interactive knowledge checks and guided learning activities which offer further learning. Some of these activities will be requirements for the ARTP portfolio. The final assessment after 10 sessions will be marked and feedback given.
