New General Practice Nursing courses to support nurses starting out in primary care
Are you a Registered Nurse or Associate Nurse who is new to working in general practice?
The Dorset Primary Care Training Hub is promoting two university-accredited General Practice Nursing (GPN) courses, delivered by Bournemouth University, to help nurses build the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to thrive in primary care.
The learning pathway includes:
General Practice Nursing Course 1 – Foundation
Starting 6 October 2026, this course provides the essential clinical and professional skills needed to begin a career in general practice. Topics include cervical screening, immunisations, diabetes care, population health, leadership and person-centred care.
General Practice Nursing Course 2 – Enhanced
Starting 4 May 2027, this follow-on course builds on the foundations, helping nurses develop enhanced consultation skills, quality improvement knowledge, long-term condition management and leadership within an evolving primary care environment.
The courses are designed for Registered Nurses and Associate Nurses who are new to working in primary care. It is recommended that learners complete the Foundation course before progressing to the Enhanced course, providing a structured pathway for professional development.
Visit our Clinical Training page to explore these courses alongside a wide range of learning and development opportunities for clinical staff across Dorset.
The course information leaflets are also available to download below, providing a detailed overview of the course content, learning outcomes and entry requirements for both programmes.
