Loss, Grief and Bereavement Support training

£200This three day course is suitable for those working on a regular basis with people affected by loss, grief and bereavement in any aspect of health and social care, palliative or end of life care, either on an employed or voluntary basis. It is most appropriate for those who have an understanding of the experience of loss, grief and bereavement and who wish to further develop their skills, knowledge and expertise in the field.

Learning outcomes:
At the end of the three days, the learner will be able to:
- Appreciate the influence of media and the environment on society’s attitudes towards death and dying.
- Compare and contract different models of grief.
- Recognise their own experience and reactions to loss, grief and bereavement and understand the importance of self-care.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of individual coping styles and the support needs of people who have been bereaved.
- Demonstrate increased confidence in supporting children affected by loss.
The day is suitable for staff working across all sectors of health and social care, including those working in the community, acute sector, hospices, care homes and domiciliary care who would like to learn more about the subject and develop their skills.
Indicative Course Content
Day 1: Society’s attitudes to death and dying; mourning rituals; work of Bowlby; anticipatory/normal/complicated grief; our own attitudes, self awareness and self care.
Day 2: Experiences and responses of patients, carers and families; exploration of resilience; equality and diversity of services; needs to children; talking to children; endings.
Day 3: Self-care & supervision, model of bereavement support session: Beginnings, Middles and Endings.
Teaching and Learning methods
A variety of approaches will be used during the day including:
Presentations, small group work, reflective learning methods, experiential techniques
Attendees may choose to attend the introductory day prior to attending this intermediate level course.
