Introduction to Spirometry in Primary Care
a One Day Introductory Course suitable for new Practice Nurses and HCAs.
Aims
- Provide an overview of what is involved in providing a quality assured spirometry service in general practice
- To understand the role of spirometry in the diagnosis and monitoring of respiratory diseases
- To demonstrate competency in the safe practice of performing spirometry procedures
- Provide a foundation to access accredited training
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this one day course and with support from mentor in practice the health care professional should:
- Understand the importance of calibration, maintenance and cleaning of spirometry equipment
- Be able to identify absolute and relative contraindications to performing spirometry
- Advise patient on preparation and correct technique for the procedure and obtaining informed consent
- Be aware of patient safety throughout the procedure and when to obtain help
- Understand and define the common terminology used for spirometry
- Be able to obtain technically acceptable and reproducible measurements
- Be able to recognise errors on the spirometry traces
- Understand the role of post bronchodilator spirometry and reversibility testing
Pre Course Work
- Look at your practice spirometry equipment, what make is your spirometer?
- Familiarise yourself with your practice protocols for maintaining, fault reporting, cleaning and calibration of the spirometer
- Observe a spirometry procedure and have a go if you have never done this before
- Download and read ‘A Guide to Performing Quality Assured Diagnostic Spirometry’ (attached)
If an HCA attends, he/she must have a named mentor
** This course does not include interpretation of spirometry traces **
