Influenza Vaccination Training Programme for Health Care Assistants

This one day course is suitable for experienced health care assistants and will provide all of the resources and tools that the HCA will need to deliver influenza immunisations.

A prerequisite for attendance is experience of general practice and evidence of learning, ideally with an NVQ 3; however the HCA can be working towards an NVQ 3 qualification or be deemed as professionally mature and competent in their workplace.

Delegates will receive a comprehensive workbook and competencies to be signed off by a mentor in Practice. The HCA will require a period of supervised practice, and review of practice annually including annual CPR and anaphylaxis updates.

Course content:

  • What is flu – how the immune system works, epidemics and pandemics
  • Undertaking  a risk assessment of the patient prior to immunisation
  • Consent and documentation
  • Legal implications of advanced practice
  • Knowledge of NMC guides to medicine management and patient specific directives
  • This seasons flu campaign; including an over view of recent changes to the programme
  • Safe handling and storage of vaccination including infection control
  • Practical demonstration to include consultation and procedure

Upon completion of the course and workbook, the HCA will have an awareness of the roles and responsibility associated with administration of the influenza vaccination.

The HCA will have received the knowledge and training to administer the seasonal influenza vaccination with the support of a Protocol and Patient Specific Directive.
