Group consultations also known as shared medical appointments are very topical at the moment.  This ‘taster’ session will give you an opportunity to hear more about:

  • How they work
  • How you might consider implementing them in your practice
  • what’s involved and overcoming some misconceptions.

Content:

  • Why group consultations might be right for you
  • Benefits for patients
  • Starting out – preparation is key!
  • The consultation itself: What to include and how to manage group dynamics
  • The medicolegal stuff – confidentiality and documentation

Two very highly skilled nurses, Bev Bostock and and Helene Irvine will facilitate these sessions immediately after the Non-Medical Prescribing mornings, and you are welcome to book either or both half days

Trainer: Beverley Bostock, RGN, BSc, MSc Nurse Practitioner & Clinical Lead, Education for Health, Warwick; Bev has an enviable mix of theory and practice when it comes to her role as both health care professional and clinical lecturer. She is a nurse practitioner/ prescriber and also works as a clinical lecturer in respiratory and cardiovascular disease and diabetes at Education for Health. Bev is an RGN with a BSc in Professional Nursing Studies, an MSc in Respiratory Care, an MA in Medical Ethics and Law, and has been a Queens Nurse since 2015. She is also a member of the Association of Respiratory Nurse Specialists and is a visiting lecturer on the MSc in preventive cardiology at Imperial College London.

Bev writes extensively for the nursing press and has a keen interest in the patients’ experience of health care. Her dissertation for her MSc examined the concept of what patients want from a consultation, comparing this to the way in which health care is currently delivered in general practice.

Trainer: Helene Irvine: Helene has had a varied career in nursing, from community midwifery to working as a practice nurse and undertaking research in midwifery and primary care. She was a member of the curriculum-planning group for the original MSc Nurse Practitioner course at Leeds Metropolitan University where she was also a lecturer and examiner. She has been an Advanced Nurse Practitioner for 20 years, until her retirement in July 2018. Helene is also a CQC Specialist Adviser and Deputy Clinical Lead for the Royal College of General Practice working on the resilience programme, and was appointed Nurse Advisor to Wessex LMCs in 2016.  Helene’s particular interest is in workforce development and working with general practice to find solutions to some of the challenges facing nursing and Practices in the coming years.
