B12 & Pneumococcal Immunisations for HCAs in BaNES/Wilts/Swindon

Pneumococcal Vaccination training for

Health Care Assistants

This one day course is open to all HCAs who are currently working in practice and who are looking to develop their skills in vaccinations. HCAs that attend this course will be undertaking practice that requires professional maturity in their role and must be trained to, or have the equivalent of an NVQ 3/Diploma in Health & Social Care.

The course requirements are that the HCA has existing skills in sharps management such as phlebotomy and injection skills such as with influenza vaccination. The HCA must be regularly updated on resuscitation and anaphylaxis training.

Course content:

  • The role of the HCA in extended practice
  • What is Pernicious anemia; the symptoms, causes and treatment
  • Monitoring patients with B12 deficiency
  • Prescribing legislation for administration / legal issues / PSD
  • Record keeping/documentation/communication with patients/capacity/consent
  • What is Pneumococcal disease?
  • Injection administration and techniques including practical session
  • Understand the legal implications of extended practice
  • Be aware of NMC guidance for medicine management
  • Demonstrate safe storage and handling of vaccines including infection control
  • Undertake a risk assessment of the patient prior to immunisation
  • Perform the procedure and consultation with confidence and competence

The course will provide a certificate of attendance, a competency framework to use with the mentor at the practice, a protocol for the administration of B12 injections and Pneumococcal vaccinations by HCAs and an example of a Patient Specific Directive (PSD) for prescribing and legal purposes.
