Oliver McGowan Training on Learning Disabilities & Autism for Dorset General Practice teams.

The Dorset General Practice Alliance is pleased to share that bookings are now open for the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism for Dorset general practice teams.

Delivered through the Primary Care Training Hub, this important training is free for Dorset general practice staff and supports teams to provide safe, compassionate and informed care for autistic people and people with a learning disability.

The training is named after Oliver McGowan, whose avoidable death brought national attention to the urgent need for better understanding and training across health and social care. His family’s campaigning has helped drive meaningful change.

The Oliver McGowan Training on Learning Disability and Autism aims to provide the health and social care workforce with the right skills and knowledge to provide safe, compassionate and informed care to autistic people and people with a learning disability. This requirement is set out in the Health and Care Act 2022.

The Oliver McGowan Training is the government’s preferred and recommended training for health and social care staff. It was named after Oliver McGowan, whose death shone a light on the need for health and social care staff to have better training. 1.2 million people have already completed part one of the training, the elearning, and the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive.

Why this matters for general practice

This training supports practice teams to develop the skills and knowledge needed to provide safe, compassionate and informed care for autistic people and people with a learning disability. It also supports staff to make appropriate adjustments to care and helps reduce health inequalities.

Delivered by local experts

Training is being delivered locally by People First Forum, a respected charity led by people with learning disabilities, through their project Led By Inclusion.

Each workshop is led by an experienced and accredited team of trainers, whose lived experience of learning disability or lived experience of autism creates insight into a practical and meaningful learning experience.
