2 Day Foundation Course in Asthma for Practice Nurses

DAY 2 IS 4TH OCTOBER 2019 – please ensure you are able to attend both days of the course.
Times: 09:30 – 16:00
09:15 – 09:30 coffee and registration – 09:30 – 16:00 training
Aim
- Provide an overview of the current understanding of asthma and the treatment and management of the condition
- Provide a knowledge base for nurses new to asthma to enhance nurse knowledge and skills relevant for general practice
- Enable practice nurses to become involved in the treatment and management of patients with asthma
- Provide a foundation to access diploma/degree level learning
Learning outcomes
On completion of the two course days and with support from a mentor, practice nurses should:
- Have an increased understanding of the disease process and how the patient may be affected
- Have an understanding of differential diagnosis of respiratory disease and asthma
- Have improved awareness of taking a history and how asthma is assessed and diagnosed
- Have the ability to use a peak flow meter and be able to teach the technique. Be able to interpret the results of serial peak flow monitoring.
- Have knowledge of the British Guideline on the Management of Asthma (BTS/SIGN) and the NICE asthma diagnoses, monitoring and chronic asthma management guideline
- Have knowledge of commonly used inhalers and devices and be able to demonstrate and check their use
- Have improved understanding of treating and managing acute asthma
- Have an understanding of the important of education and self management to improve concordance with treatment and enable the patient to actively manage their condition
- Be working towards undertaking a basic patient review
- Increased awareness to manage consultation time effectively; recognise the important of goal setting and guiding the patient to set the agenda for the consultation.
Course content
Pre course work
Review anatomy and physiology of the respiratory tract
If possible, try to obtain some commonly used placebo inhaler devices, instruction leaflets and a peak flow meter and bring to session
Day One
- Welcome and housekeeping. Introduction and aims of the course
- Hand out and explanation of the Portfolio
- Asthma – the challenge
- Anatomy and physiology of the respiratory tract in relation to asthma
- History taking workshop
- Inhalers, devices and peak flow workshop
- Introduction to the BTS/SIGN British Guideline on the Management of Asthma and the NICE Asthma: diagnosis, monitoring and chronic asthma management guideline. Making a diagnosis of asthma
Course activities for day two
Observe an asthma review with your mentor and complete a reflection of the review for your portfolio
Review the diagnosis of an asthma patient in your surgery. On what basis was the diagnosis made and how as this documented. Is there a record of any objective tests that have been carried out. Would you agree with this diagnosis? Would you have done anything differently?
Access Patient UK and print a peak flow diary and record your peak flow readings for one week. Include the diary in your portfolio

Day Two
- Feedback from day one and activities
- Respiratory therapeutics for asthma
- Asthma treatment and management
- Management of acute asthma
- Patient education and self management
Course Content Presentation
The course content will be delivered using PowerPoint presentations, interactive group work, the use of case studies and workshops. Course participants will be asked to complete some activities prior to each study day. A resource portfolio will be provided for course participants to collect course materials and evidence of their learning and development in asthma patient care and to complete a series of competencies as below
