Verification of Expected Death (VoED)

This workshop meets the principles stated by the NMC for verification of death. It is therefore suitable for all Registered Nurses from community, care home or hospital setting.It commences with identifying patients who are at the end of their life, recognising the dying phase and the use of appropriate and compassionate communication around end of life. The second part of the workshop is evidence-based and ensures participants can demonstrate the knowledge and competencies to correctly verify an expected death.
Attendance on the course will achieve the following learning outcomes:

  • Understand the role of the Registered Nurse in Verification of Death and the conditions set by the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) when undertaking this role
  • Identify the circumstances when it would be appropriate and helpful for a Registered Nurse to be able to fulfil this role
  • Differentiate between verification and certification of death
  • Outline the differences between expected death and other patterns of dying
  • List the accepted clinical signs of death
  • Demonstrate competency in carrying out the clinical observations required to correctly verify death
  • Identify the documentation that needs to be completed before, during and after verification of expected death, according to local policy
