Introduction to Phlebotomy for HCAs & Practice Nurses (Dorset)

This one day course is for Health Care Assistants or nurses new to General Practice who will be undertaking phlebotomy within their role. It covers both theoretical and practical aspects including demonstration and practice on training arms and pads.

This course will provide a certificate of attendance, competency work book for completion with observed practice and mentorship in practice and phlebotomy guidelines.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session all attendees should be able to:

  • Obtain a basic venous blood sample under appropriate supervision.
  • Perform phlebotomy to a National Occupational Standard – NPSA  SPN 14 – Obtaining a Venous Blood Sample.
  • Demonstrate safe practice reducing the potential for sample errors and needle stick injury.

Course Content

  • Health & Safety / current legislation
  • Equipment  including :Vacuum systems / winged collection sets / blood sample tubes / tourniquets
  • Order of Draw when obtaining samples
  • Pre-analytical errors
  • Technique including:Locating difficult veins / problem solving
  • Storage and Transportation of samples
  • Blood Cultures & Aseptic Technique

Resources for all delegates

Roger Hoke (Trainer) has published a new individual “working portfolio” to be distributed to all the delegates attending the course alongside the fantastic text book he has written.

This additional resource allows the delegate to have a documented record of their competencies and training courses and evidence of learning through sign of competencies / quality assurance which are linked to the national framework.

The Portfolios have been kite marked by NAPP (National Association of Phlebotomy Physicians )
