Additional Roles were introduced for Primary Care Networks (PCNs) as part of the annual Network Contract Directed Enhanced Service (DES) from 2019 -2024 to implement The NHS Long Term Plan published in January 2019 following significant investment to expand the workforce to provide additional capacity in general practice.

Whilst the Additional Roles are new to General practice – many will be working in hospital and community settings already, so we need to manage our pipeline of talent. Through coordinated recruitment and redesigning roles and ways of working, we can enable these professionals to have portfolio roles across primary care, community and hospital settings providing maximum benefit to all involved.
